Grease Helps Deter Vandals From San Jose Train Trestle

A train trestle popular among taggers is finally clean.

Union Pacific has adopted a unique tactic for keeping a San Jose bridge graffiti-free: Grease.

Barbed and razor wire did not deter vandals, so the property owner decided to slather black grease onto poles and steel plates welded onto the bridge, located near Bird Avenue.

The grease makes the bridge too slippery to climb, officials say.

“It’s a good idea,” said Jim Davis of San Jose. “It’s a great idea – got to try different things and something might work.”
