Mother Nature brought a slew of hail, roaring thunder and lightning strikes to parts of the Bay Area Sunday afternoon.
People on social media were posting about hail storms in the East Bay and North Bay and hail with thunder and lightning in the South Bay.
The storm that emerged across the region Sunday was a slow-moving cell, thus allowing for significant hail accumulations, according to NBC Bay Area meteorologist Rob Mayeda.
A cold compact storm brought thunder at times and periods of hail (enough to pile up on the ground in spots) in the East Bay and eventually into the Santa Clara Valley near San Jose by Sunday evening.
A video posted to Reddit and YouTube also shows a lightning explosion near a power pole, while it was hailing. [[507002921, C]]
Daytime heating and cooling air aloft was a recipe for firing off some of these stronger showers, with a boost from upward vertical motion on the east side of a compact area of low pressure just west of San Francisco, Mayeda said.
