Passengers flying in and out of San Francisco International Airport may have to prepare for delays, when two of the airport's four runways shut down in May.
The runways will be closed from mid-May to September while safety projects are begun, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Airport officials note "the possibility of delays," but said that weather will have more impact than shuttered tarmac.
Runway closures are nothing new: two of the four runways are routinely not used 100 days a year because of high winds, officials said.
SFO's runways are too short for Federal Aviation Administration requirements, the newspaper reported. Because they can't be made longer, SFO is installing material at the end of the runways that slow a runaway plane.
