Hiram Lawrence Took His Last Breath: Family

Hiram Lawrence Jr. was shot in the head while in his father's arm last week.

The parents of the toddler shot in a hail of bullets last week in West Oakland said the 1-year-old passed away.

The news came one day after doctors said they were going to take the boy off life support.

Hiram Lawrence Jr. was critically injured after being shot in the head on Nov. 28. His second birthday was just days away.

"God has taken Baby Hiram. He has taken his last breath. Pray for Britney and Hiram Lady Gilder," a family member told NBC Bay Area's Jodi Hernandez.

The family's pastor, Roosevelt Taylor, told reporters Wednesday that doctors at Children's Hospital told the family earlier this week that Hiram Jr. was brain dead. His parents made a tearful and public plea begging doctors to give their son more time and a second opinion.

That second opinion was to come Thursday and apparently it did not change the diagnosis.

Through all of this, Children's Hospital spokeswoman Erin Goldsmith could not comment on the little boy's condition because of privacy laws.

Hiram Jr. was among seven people injured when gunmen opened fire on a crowd of people outside a liquor store on Willow Street shortly after 6 p.m. on Nov. 28. The group was there to take part in a rap music video.

Police are offering a reward of up to $35,000 for information about the shooters, who were captured on surveillance camera opening fire in the parking lot.
