Injured Vets Take Part in Week-Long Bike Ride Along California Coast

More than 200 injured vets and their supporters hit the road Sunday for a week-long bike ride along the California coast.

The sea of riders decked out in red, white, and blue started out Sunday morning at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. They stopped in San Jose for a much-needed rest stop.

They will pedal for about another 400 miles until they reach the VA hospital in West Los Angeles next weekend.

Organizers of the Ride 2 Recovery California Challenge said there are many forms of therapy for injured vets, but cycling is one of the best.

"It's an athletic endeavor. It's an agenda. It's an activity. It's a healthy life style," bike leader Brian W. Scholl said. "It really gives them an opportunity to search their soul, get out, view some of the best areas in the country."

The riders will spend the night in Gilroy, and Monday's leg will take them to Carmel.
