iPad Pushes Apple's Computer Growth Up 241 Percent

The iPad is mighty but not mightier than the HP.

Apple has become the third leading computer shipper in the world, when tablets are considered computers, according to a new study by Canalys.

The study shows that Hewlett Packard ships the most computers worldwide, followed by Acer and then Apple, with Dell very narrowly in fourth place.

The study shows that the worldwide PC market grew by 19 percent year over year in the fourth quarter with 10.8 million computers being shipped.

Apple shipped 11.5 million computers and iPads in the fourth quarter of 2010, up from 3.4 million the previous year.

The change marks a growth of 241 percent for Apple, by far the largest jump of any of the top sellers.

For its part, HP shipped 18.7 million devices and controls 17.7 percent of the market.
