Hold your horses on that upcoming iPhone 5, because whispers about next year's iPhone 6 are already slipping out.
Quietly updating its original story with a new tidbit, the Wall Street Journal reports that its heard Apple "has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone." Currently, iPhones are charged through a 30-pin to USB via a computer or an electrical plug. Although the detail is vague, we're already wondering if Apple is thinking of ditching the wires to charge, like something along HP's Palm Pre wireless charging TouchStone technology.
Pre owners will know all about the TouchStone. Essentially, it's a dock that uses magnetic induction to charge the smartphone. All you need to do is place the smartphone on the dock, and it begins to charge — no need to plug in any cables. Pull the smartphone off and it stops charging. It's as easy as that.
As Apple blog TUAW notes Apple's move to untether its iOS devices from iTunes and move everything into the iCloud could support the company's decision to completely cut the cords — even for charging.
Take the iPhone 6 news with a huge grain of salt, as it's still way to early to determine if the rumor has any weight. Real iPhone 6 news will make its way out when the iPhone 5's been on the market for a few months. For now, don't let any talk of an iPhone 6 stop you from picking up an iPhone 5 this September, if you've been holding out for Apple's next smartphone.
