Bay Area Reps. Jackie Speier, Barbara Lee Arrested During Protest in DC

Bay Area congresswomen Jackie Speier and Barbara Lee were among the 17 members of Congress arrested Tuesday during an abortion rights protest in Washington, D.C.

The group marched from the Capitol building to the Supreme Court in the wake of the high court overturning Roe v. Wade.

When they disobeyed orders to disperse, police took them into custody.

U.S. Capitol Police said they made a total of 35 arrests for crowding, obstructing or incommoding during the demonstration.

Seventeen members of Congress were arrested and charged with obstructing traffic during an abortion rights protest in Washington D.C. Among them was Rep. Jackie Speier from the Peninsula. She spoke with NBC Bay Area’s Janelle Wang after the arrest.
