Jews, Muslims to Fight SF Circumcision Ban

Leave it to foreskin to act as an interfaith bridge in San Francisco.

The City known for its zany laws and political stances is uniting two sides who are often seen as rivals but who actually have theological commonalities.

A proposed ban on circumcision in San Francisco is bringing together local chapters of the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Anti-Defamation League with local Muslims.

San Francisco resident Lloyd Schofield has led a grassroots effort to require the necessary 7,200 signatures needed to make it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to have a circumcision performed on them, even with the parents permission.

Religious groups have decried the measure and Wednesday the Jewish and Muslims groups are expected to file a lawsuit against the proposed ballot measure asking that it be removed from the November ballot.

The groups, who represent communities that engage in circumcision as a religious practice, say the issue is not something that should be decide by voters.
