Lake County Winery Destroyed By Valley Fire
The Lake County fires have destroyed one winery and prompted worry from others about the possibility of tainted grapes.
According to Press Democrat, the main building of Shed Horn Cellars, a winery located just outside Middletown, has been destroyed. Owners Michael and Adawn Wood also lost their home, but luckily the tasting room and inventory survived so they can fulfill orders.
After two prior fires this year, wineries in the area have been testing their grapes for possible smoke taint. Concerns have been reignited, but Tom Collins, an assistant professor at Washington State University's Wine Science Institute, told the publication that the fruit was probably not exposed to the smoke long enough to cause damage.
"I'm not sure the risk is greatly increased by the fire," he said.
