Oakland Coliseum BART Station Reopens Following Protest

A civil disturbance temporarily shut down service at the Oakland Coliseum BART station Monday afternoon, transit agency officials said.

BART officials issued a service advisory around 3:50 p.m. announcing the station closure.

The disturbance was related to a protest scheduled Monday that was dubbed the "Reclaim King's Legacy" march in which the protesters organized to link the civil rights legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with recent protests against police shootings of unarmed black people.

Service was restored at the station at about 4:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, a large crowd of protesters left Fruitvale BART station in Oakland, police said.

The march started moving down International Boulevard as of about 1:30 p.m.

Other protesters gathered at 14th Street and Broadway in Oakland and joined the group that left Fruitvale.

It is one of the last actions in a planned weekend of protests that started with demonstrations at the Montgomery BART station Friday morning.

Fruitvale BART station was where Oscar Grant III was shot by a BART police officer on Jan. 1, 2009.
