Last-Minute Shopping with a Rifle

Robber gets away in a stolen car at a South Bay mall.

As Christmas fast approaches, desperate shoppers have been known to take it up a notch. Racing fellow shoppers down the aisle, even cutting in line can seem justifiable this late in the game.

But one man wearing a trench coat at Valley Fair Mall Thursday took things a little too far.

His rampage began around 5:20 p.m. when he tried and failed to rob a clerk at clothing store Club Monaco, according to police.

Next, he tried and failed to carjack a woman in the Nordstrom parking garage.

The man finally got serious and busted out a rifle that was underneath his coat. Then he successfully robbed a clerk at the Men's Wearhouse and Tux.

He used a knife during his second attempt at a carjacking on Cecil Street, getting away in a white Nissan Altima with plate 6NDA586, the Mercury News reports. San Jose and Santa Clara police are investigating.

Everything happened so quickly, the mall didn't have time to close during the incident. It was one of the busiest shopping days of the year. With eBay now sending procrastinators to brick and mortar shops, people might not have noticed the robber in such a large crowd.

At least the robber wasn't going after a Big Mouth Billy Bass singing fish, or any of the other 50 worst gifts of all time.
