San Mateo County becomes first in United States to declare loneliness a public health crisis

NBC Universal, Inc.

San Mateo County on Tuesday became the first in the United States to declare loneliness a public health crisis.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the declaration. Supervisors are hoping to raise money to, among other things, create a "minister of loneliness" position.

Meanwhile, a new app also aims to help people beat back loneliness.

NBC Bay Area's Scott Budman breaks it all down in the video report above.
