Man Arrested for Attempted Murder at Kaiser Medical Center in Redwood City

A man who allegedly threatened a worker Friday at the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center was arrested and booked for charges that include attempted murder, brandishing a deadly weapon and making terrorist threats.

Police quickly responded to reports at at 6:33 a.m. of an active shooter in the emergency room at the medical center on Veterans Boulevard.

"A reporting party advised shots were heard and that a male subject was brandishing a knife inside the hospital lobby," police said in a release.

Police located 56-year-old Thomas Smith of Redwood City, who complied with commands, dropping a large knife and what was later determined to be a realistic replica handgun onto the floor.

Officers determined that Smith "threatened a Kaiser employee with the knife and brandished the replica handgun while threatening to kill him."

They also concluded that no shots had been fired and nobody was injured during the incident.

Smith was treated for "a minor, self-inflicted injury" before being booked booked into the San Mateo County jail.
