Man in Wheelchair Falls Off Platform, Hit By BART Train

A man in a wheelchair who was hit by a train Saturday afternoon remained in critical condition Sunday, Eden Medical Center spokeswoman Stacey Wells told Bay City News.

The man has been identified as 64-year-old Curtis FullerThe Associated Press reports Fuller was making an adjustment to his wheel chair when one of his wheels fell off the platform and sent him onto the tracks where he was in turn run over by a six-car Richmond-bound train.

This all happened just before 3 p.m. Saturday afernoon at the Hayward BART station.

BART spokesman Linton Johnson said Fuller was pinned for a time.  Emergency officials said he was breathing, but unconscious when they removed him from the tracks.

During the rescue, investigators said they found a handgun among Fuller's belongings, but were not sure if it belonged to the victim.

Johnson told Bay City News that BART police are investigating where the gun came from.  Police told AP they did not know if the gun was in any way related to the incident.
