Man Reported Missing Off State Beach in Monterey Bay

A search was launched Sunday in the waters of Monterey Bay for a man reported missing off a state beach south of Watsonville, according to State Park rangers and the Coast Guard.

The report of the missing man came in about 4:30 p.m. at Palm Beach State Park, 2660 Beach Road, Lt. Steven Dross said.

The Coast Guard and California Highway Patrol sent helicopters to help search the waters at the beach on Monterey Bay.

Two people told a lifeguard that they saw a person disappear in the water, prompting the search, Palm Beach State Park Lifeguard Supervisor Eddie Rhee-Pizano said.

The two people had no relationship with the person who appeared to have drowned, and no one reported to emergency officials that a family member was missing.

The search had been called off as of about 9:10 p.m., Dross said.

Santa Cruz County firefighters, paramedics and lifeguards also were assisting with the search.

There were no details available about what the man was doing before he went missing.
