Manslaughter Charges Recommended For Man Who Fell Asleep At Wheel, Killing Daughters

CHP has recommended criminal charges against father whose daughters died in crash.

The father whose two daughters were killed after he fell asleep at the wheel of his SUV should face vehicular manslaughter charges, according to police.

Prosecutors have not yet filed charges against Arvind Tandel, 48, whose daughters, Sheetal Tandel, 20, and Nisha Tandel, 24, died Nov. 23 on Highway 101, according to Bay Area News Group.

Nisha Tandel was to be married in January, and the family was returning from "an all night Black Friday shopping trip" in Palo Alto when he "nodded off," the newspaper reported.

Tandel has not been arrested and prosecutors told the newspaper that they were not "sure" when or if charges would be filed.

Tandel did not respond to a message left on his cell phone.

California Highway Patrol officers recommend the charges because Tandel "knowingly" got behind the wheel of his SUV after getting only three hours' sleep in the preceding 24 hours.

The family, including his wife and two other daughters, had been gift shopping in Gilory for Nisha Tandel's wedding, which was to take place in India.

The two daughters who died were not wearing seat belts, the newspaper reported. It's also against the law to drive a vehicle when passengers are unbuckled.

The Lexus SUV flipped after hitting a parked CHP cruiser at 6:50 a.m. Nov. 23 near the Oregon Expressway exit.
