The idea that San Francisco police would be allowed to stop and search people without a warrant?
Mayor Ed Lee has stopped it.
The mayor will seek alternative approaches to ending the spate of violence and homicides exploding in the city's southeastern areas, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, after his suggestion that the city could adopt a controversial strategy used in New York caused a backlash.
Lee in June suggested that SFPD adopt stop and frisk, a policy used in New York City that has been slammed as racial profiling. Mostly black men and Latinos have been stopped, according to reports.

Community leaders and the entire Board of Supervisors voiced displeasure over Lee's idea. So Lee on Tuesday rolled out an alternative plan, in which police will seek out people on probation and parole for weapons, use computers, and rely on ministers to rid the streets of violence, the newspaper reported.
The Rev. Joseph Bryant of Calvary Hill Community Church in the Bayview told the newspaper he has taken many guns to police.
