Middle School Girls Show Off Their Cyber Security Skills

It was all about girl power at Saturday’s very first CyberGirlz Silicon Valley Summit.

About 50 middle school girls spent the day at San Jose State University showing off their cyber security skills.

Facebook developed a capture-the-flag competition that tested the girls' web exploitation and basic programming abilities -- all which they picked up in their STEM-focused afterschool program.

“It was also rewarding because it was really challenging to answer these questions, so when you finally answered them you were like, ‘Yay, I did it!’” said Monroe Middle School student Jordan Nguyen.

The hope is that some of the girls will pursue scientific and engineering courses in college, all which are male-dominated fields.
