It is now officially summerl both on the calendar and in the hearts and minds of those who live in the Bay Area. The solstice hit at exactly 10:16 a.m. Tuesday and at about the same time the South Bay city of Sunnyvale passed the 95 degree mark.
Also in the 10 o'clock hour the National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for the entire San Francisco Bay Area which will be in effect until 8 p.m.
It almost like the earth's weather patterns were watching the calendar.
NBC Bay Area chief meteorologist Jeff Ranieri said, as of 4:00 p.m. today, it reached 104 degrees in Pleasanton, 101 in Santa Rosa and Walnut Creek, and 100 in Cupertino, as well as South San Jose.
San Francisco reached 79, which is not crazy-hot, but above average.
The official high for most South and East Bay cities were in the high 90s Monday, with San Jose, Pleasanton, Sunnyvale and Petaluma hitting 100.
Tuesday is also the Bay Area's first Spare the Air day of the brand new season.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issues the warning on days it deems air quality hits the unhealthy zone. BAAQMD notes that last summer the first summer Spare the Air day was called until August.
Officials would like you to help reduce smog levels by driving less.
