Mountain Lion Sightings Reported in Gilroy

Mountain lion sightings have been reported several times throughout the week in Gilroy, according to Gilroy Police Department.

On Monday, Gilroy Police reported the first sighting of an adult mountain lion in a wooded area behind a residence on 9200 Mahogany Court. The mountain lion was seen again in the same area on Wednesday.

A Gilroy resident walking his dog on Thursday came across the mountain lion on Tea Tree Way and Mimosa Court, according to Gilroy Police. The resident said the mountain lion jumped down from a tree and stood about five feet away from him. Even though the animal followed him at first, the mountain lion eventually retreated into the woods.

Gilroy Police Officers conducted a thorough search of the area and the mountain lion was not found.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife will be working with the Gilroy Police Department to help ensure the safety of the public.

Community members are reminded that they are in close proximity to mountain lion habitat.

Gilroy Police encourage people to hike in groups and to keep children within sight at all times. If confronted with a lion, they want residents to not approach the lion or run from it.
