N. Korean Trial to Begin for SF-Based Reporters

Vigils planned across country

Supporters of two U.S. journalists scheduled to go on trial in North Korea will hold a vigil Wednesday evening at San Francisco City Hall.

Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who work for the San Francisco-based Current TV, were arrested March 17 near the North Korean border, reportedly while working on a story on refugees living in China.

The government of North Korea accuses the women of crossing into the country illegally and committing "hostile acts."

Their trial in North Korea on criminal charges is scheduled to begin this week.

Volunteers will gather at 6 p.m. on the steps of City Hall, where they will hand out flowers, ribbons and candles.

Similar events are scheduled in Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Portland and Birmingham.
