San Franciscans and those in the political world on Dec. 12 woke up to stunning news that <a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/San-Francisco-Mayor-Ed-Lee-Dies-463603123.html" "target="_blank">San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee died</a> after suffering a heart attack. Lee, 65, was the city's 43rd mayor and its first Asian-American mayor.

A <a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Search-For-Escaped-Psychiatric-Patient-Randall-Saito-Hawaii-457549753.html" "target="_blank">man described as fitting the profile of a serial killer</a> somehow escaped from a Hawaii psychiatric hospital back in November, boarded a charter flight to Maui, and then hopped onto a plane bound for San Jose. The man led authorities on a days-long search in California before he was eventually captured in Stockton.
