San Jose is about to become a little brighter at night.
The city council approved several initiatives on Tuesday designed to save San Jose money and energy.
One of the changes is the installation of more LED street lights. The mayor’s office say San Jose’s many yellow or amber lights were installed in the 1970s to save energy and to prevent light pollution for the nearby Lick Observatory, situated on the summit of Mount Hamilton, just east of the city.
The new LEDs are a brighter white light, but they don’t cause more light pollution. They also use 60 percent less energy.
Chevron is in charge of implementing the energy efficiency changes.
