San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza will be the site of a new café selling ice cream and fresh food through a donation to the Trust for Public Land from the Helen Diller Family Foundation.
The café was announced Tuesday by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department in partnership with the Trust and the Civic Center Community Benefit District.
It will be in a kiosk located at the corner of Grove and Larkin streets, operated by Bi-Rite, which already has markets on Divisadero and 18th streets.
The transparent structure, designed by San Francisco-basedarchitecture and planning firm WRNS Studio, will allow for parents to keep an eye on the on-site playgrounds.
It's going to be funded by $1 million of a $10 million donation the Helen Diller Family Foundation provided in 2013 to construct two modern playgrounds at Civic Center Plaza currently under renovation at no cost to the city.
The renovation's conceptual design was finalized and approved last fall, and city officials broke ground on the reconstruction project in February.
The café still has to be approved by the Planning Department, and is scheduled for review by the Historic Preservation Commission's Architectural Review Committee on Aug. 2. If they approve it, it goes to the rest of the Historic Preservation Commission Aug. 16.

The project is still subject to a public hearing process, however, and a timeline for completion has not yet been determined.
