Newsom Speaks Up for His Wife

First lady of San Francisco previews her directorial debut

Those waiting for Gavin Newsom to make a public statement finally have their wish.

The San Francisco Mayor is talking about the portrayal of women in media in his wife's directorial debut. The actress turned politician's wife has released a trailer for her upcoming documentary “Miss Representation,” which features her husband and a host of colorful characters including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Katie Couric

Jennifer Siebel Newsom's film explores the under representation of women in positions of power in this country.

“If people knew that Cuba, China, Iraq and Afghanistan have more women in government than the United States of America, that would get some people upset,” the San Francisco Examiner quoted her as saying in the trailer.

Newsom said her daughter was a major motivation for making the movie.

“My other greatest hope is that my child will grow up in a world where she not only feels her own power as a woman,” Newsom said at a launch party just before she gave birth. “But that she will not be influenced or objectified or demeaned by mass media.”

The actress also drew a powerful group of backers to help distribute the movie including financial contributions from PG&E and Levi Strauss & Co.
