Light Lines, Plenty of iPads

Overheard this morning outside the Apple Store in San Francisco: "No lines, really?"

And there are plenty of the new iPads still in stock. Which leads one to wonder, Why would anyone stand in a line for hours overnight in the rain waiting for the doors to open at 8 a.m.?

Scott Miner wanted one now. He missed his opportunity online. He had to be at work in Livermore at 930 a.m.

Without a time machine, his only option in his eyes was to arrive last night at 9:30 p.m. for an 10-and-a-half-hour slog in the on and off rain that spat all over San Francisco.

He left the store at 8:10 a.m. flashing the number one sign with one hand with a brand new iPad in the other.

John Gilardi didn't have much choice. His only other option was to pay 20 percent more back home in Germany where he's living as an expat.

Besides he delayed his flight 24 hours just for todays iPad release.

Others waited in the line because, well ... it's a cultural thing to do:  to be able to say I remember when I stood out in the rain one dreary night in the city and caught a cold.

At least they have something to cozy up to in bed.
