A soldier from Northern California died this week in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.
Spec. Nicholas Burley, 22, of Red Bluff died Tuesday of injuries he suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit 30 miles south of Kabul.
Gov. Jerry Brown ordered flags at the State Capitol to fly at half-staff in honor of Spc. Burley.
"On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Spc. Nicholas B. Burley, who bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time," the governor's statement read.
The website Army Times posted six photos of Spc. Burley's body, which was draped in an American flag, arriving at Dover Air Force Base on Friday.
Spc. Burley was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
He graduated from Red Bluff High School in 2008.
