The number of arrests for drunken driving during the holiday
season in Sonoma, Alameda and Santa Clara counties is down from last year,
but up slightly in San Francisco as of Christmas Eve, according to reporting
agencies.
The countywide Avoid campaigns, named for the number of police
agencies in each county, began Dec. 12 and end New Year's Day, spokeswoman
Jan Ford said.
San Francisco law enforcement personnel have made 84 arrests for
drunken driving during this year's campaign, an 8 percent increase from last
year's 78 arrests by midnight on Christmas Eve, Ford said.
In Alameda County, the Avoid the 21 campaign has netted 708
arrests, down from last year's 847, according to Ford.
The Avoid the 13 campaign in Sonoma County has yielded 143
arrests, compared to 165 as of Christmas Eve last year, Ford said.
Provisional reports show law enforcement personnel for Santa Clara
County's Avoid the 13 campaign have arrested 490 alleged drunken drivers,
down from last year's 553 arrests, sheriff's Sgt. Don Morrissey said.
