The children of an inmate who died in a Bay Area jail after guards stunned him with a Taser settled a federal lawsuit for $8.3 million
Alameda County and Corizon Health Care Inc. will split the payout to the four children of 50-year-old Martin Harrison. Corizon provides health care to Alameda County jail inmates. Harrison was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in August 2010 and jailed in Alameda County's Santa Rita jail in Dublin, California. According the children's lawsuit, Harrison was suffering alcohol withdrawals that jailers refused to treat. Guards said they used a Taser on Harrison after he attacked them.
As part of the settlement announced Tuesday, Corizon agreed to have registered nurses take on more duties in treating inmates. Corizon provides health care to inmates in 27 states.
