Oakland Man Drowns in Hawaii

The body of a 41-year-old Oakland man who went missing while swimming in Hawaii was found Thursday morning, officials said.

Son Vo went snorkeling at about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday in the ocean fronting the Kaanapali Villa's in Maui, according to the Maui County Police Department. Vo never returned and was reported missing by friends just before 7 p.m.

Firefighters and a rescue squad searched the immediate ocean and shoreline areas with a rescue boat. The Coast Guard also assisted in the search with a helicopter.

The search was suspended at 2 a.m. Wednesday and resumed at first light, officials said.

Vo's body was spotted just after 6 a.m. by a helicopter and was recovered by rescue divers.

However, he was found to be unresponsive and was pronounced dead.

A police investigation revealed that there were no signs of foul play surrounding Vo's death.
