Negotiations to Resume as Oakland Teachers Poised to Extend Strike

Oakland teachers and school district officials plan to resume negotiations that would end a work stoppage that started Thursday.

Thousands of educators in the Oakland Unified School District are prepared to return to the picket lines on Tuesday if they are unable to reach a deal for a new contract, according to the Oakland Education Association.

The main sticking points are salary and class sizes.

Teachers are asking for a 12 percent retroactive raise covering 2017 to 2020 to compensate for what they say are among the lowest salaries for public school teachers in the expensive San Francisco Bay Area.
