Officer-Involved Shooting in Lafayette

A 28-year-old man, who authorities said was wielding a knife, was shot early Tuesday morning by one or two police officers in Lafayette - the first such kind of shooting in the city's history.

Police Chief Eric Christensen said Tuesday at a news conference that the suspect lived in the home and was shot because he allegedly didn't put down his knife.

Just after 7 a.m., 911 dispatchers received a series of hangup calls, which prompted deputies to go to a home at 3425 Woodview Drive, which is set in an affluent neighborhood in the East Bay suburb of about 24,000.

Three people plus the suspect were in the house when officers arrived, but the status of the others remain unclear. Neighbors said a couple lives in the home with two or three adult children and a live-in boyfriend.

The 28-year-old was a resident of the home, police said.

One neighbor told NBC Bay Area he heard three shots. At the scene, windows of the home were broken.
