Officials Warn San Francisco Residents of Scammer Posing as Police Officer

San Francisco residents are being warned about a phone and text message scam in which a person claiming to be a police officer contacts the victim and tells them he is investigating them, the Department of Emergency Management announced Thursday.

The caller uses the name Edward Johnson or Jeffrey Johnson and has allegedly fabricated his caller identification to resemble the telephone number of the police's non-emergency line -- (415) 553-0123 -- according to department officials.

The suspect tells the victims through a text message or phone call that he is investigating them for sending nude pictures to a woman, department officials said.

Officials are urging residents who have received the calls not to send any money to the suspect.

Also, if the suspect leaves a voice message, victims are encouraged to preserve it and file a police report, according to officials.
