One-Alarm Fire in San Jose Displaces At Least 10 People, 3 Dogs, 1 Parrot

A one-alarm fire this morning at a duplex in San Jose displaced at least 10 people, three dogs and a parrot, according to a fire captain.

Firefighters responded at 7:11 a.m. to a report of a fire in the 600 block of Jasper Street, a fire dispatcher said.

The fire was brought under control shortly before 8 a.m., according to the dispatcher.

The blaze started in one of the garages of the duplex and was beginning to spread to the other garage, but firefighters were able to contain it before it could spread further, San Jose fire Capt. Mitch Matlow said.

No cars were inside the garage at the time, he said.

Matlow said the rest of the home sustained heat and smoke damage.

No injuries were reported.

Neighbors came by the home to tell the residents their garage was on fire and Matlow said everyone made it out safely before firefighters arrived.

The American Red Cross is assisting six of the 10 people find shelter, Matlow said.

"We had three dogs and a parrot also displaced," Matlow said. "They were scared but not injured."

He said the cause of the fire is still undetermined.
