One Bore of Caldecott Tunnel Reopens After Car Crash, Dozens Evacuate

The eastbound bore of the Caldecott Tunnel that closed Monday morning for four hours after a car crash prompting the evacuation of about 60 drivers, has reopened.

The California Highway Patrol reported a blue 2000 Ford Taurus rear-ended a gray 2003 Saturn L300 at 6:43 a.m., causing the Ford to catch on fire.

The CHP issued a Sig-alert at 6:47 a.m. for bore No. 1 of the tunnel. About 60 people were evacuated from the right bore, and an aerial view showed many people standing on the side of the tunnel.

Firefighters put out the fire by 7:30 a.m. The bore reopened about 11:30 a.m.

The Caldecott Tunnel connects Oakland to Orinda on state Highway 24.

The CHP said no one was injured during the collision.
