Only Theater to Serve Booze Closes

The Parkway Speakeasy Theater closed its door Sunday

If a movie theater that brought drinks and pizza to your seat on a couch can't survive, then this country is in deep trouble.

But that's the story at Oakland's Parkway Speakeasy Theater, which showed its last movie Sunday night.

It was the first movie theater in California to serve booze to moviegoers who lounge on couches to catch a show.

Shows were generally second-run, but tickets were cheap. And did I mention food and drinks? Or couches?

"We, at the Parkway Speakeasy Theater, are deeply proud of the Parkway and will profoundly miss serving its community," wrote co-founder Kyle Fischer in a letter to patrons.

The good news is that you can still catch a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show while dining at The Cerrito Speakeasy Theater in El Cerrito. Photo by Logan Ingalls.

Jackson West's only regret is that he didn't go more often.
