Palo Alto police began searching for a suspect Wednesday afternoon in the backyards of the city, and arrested him in about three hours of searching residents' backyards.
At 12:35 p.m., police said that officers tried to pull over a man downtown, but he fled and then may have tried to carjack a passing motorist.
Along with dogs from the K-9 unit, police began searching for the supsect near the intersection of Hawthorne Avenue and Waverly Street, where the suspect is believed to be hiding in a yard. Police finally found him, taking him into custody by 3:30 p.m.
A reverse 911 call was sent out to city residents, describing the suspect as a light-skinned black man with a shaved head in his 40s and standing about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a white shirt and blue plants. At the time, police did not know if the man was armed.
He was described as a black man with a shaved head between 35 and 40 years old and about 6 feet tall. He was wearing a white shirt and black pants.
Further details about the arrest were not immediately available.
