Racial Profiling Debate Takes Center Stage in Palo Alto

Police chief in trouble over comments, orders to officers

The Palo Alto City Council on Monday night approved a resolution reaffirming that it does not tolerate racial profiling.

The move came after Police Chief Lynne Johnson said she instructed her officers to approach African American men as part of the response to a string of robberies.

She later apologized and said she fully complies with the city's policy against racial profiling.

"She believes she has work to do and will complete that work." Palo Alto Police agent Dan Ryan said.

The city manager has the authority to fire Johnson but he says he won't make any decisions until after the chief presents her plan to repair her relationship with the public.

Johnson will present that plan at a Nov. 17 meeting.
