Palo Alto Testing Out New Caltrain Safety System

A frightening uptick in deaths on Caltrain tracks is motivating one Peninsula city to test out a new safety system.

Palo Alto city leaders hope a network of cameras stops the increase of suicides. Officials said the suicide rate is the highest it has been in 10 years.

The system of cameras would allow officers to be alerted and give responders more time to get the person off the tracks. The surveillance network would also be able to detect a stalled car.

The cost and when the installations might begin have not been finalized.
