San Francisco Giants fans have shown their generous side this week as they helped the team raise $70,000 for the Bryan Stow fund.
Stow is the fan who was attacked following the team's Opening Day game in L.A. on March 31. He remains in a coma, and may have suffered permanent brain damage.
The money gathered for the fund will go toward the medical costs and other expenses for Stow and his family.
Monday night, the Giants teamed up with Stow's employer, American Medical Response, to gather donations at the ballpark. Both Giants and Dodger fans opened their wallets and dropped bills, many of them 20s, into the buckets before, during and after the game. The Giants started the drive with a $10,000 donation. There was also a silent auction that helped raise thousands more. The auction items were donated from teams around the Bay Area like the Sharks and the A's.
The players did something rare in response to the attack ahead of Monday's game. Members of both the Giants and the Dodgers gathered on the pitcher's mound before first pitch as a show of sportsmanship. Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt and Dodgers second baseman Jamey Carroll both talked to the crowd about sportmanship saying the Giants/Dodgers rivalry has to stay on the field, without violence and hatred in the stands.
There is also a sizeable reward fund that is growing down in L.A. No arrests have been made in Stow's attack, but anyone who can help cops find the people responsible could get up to $150,000.
