Pedestrian Killed in Palo Alto, Police Arrest Teen Driver on DUI

Police arrested a teenage driver on suspicion of DUI after a man was fatally struck Monday morning by a 2007 Nissan Maxima that struck a power pole in Palo Alto.

Lt. Zach Perron did not identify the man who was killed about 6:15 a.m. in the 2000 block of East Bayshore Road.

The 19-year-old driver was identified by police as Miguel Zaragoza Torres of Sunnyvale. Investigators said he was traveling southbound on East Bayshore Road when struck a power pole on the east curbline of the 2000 block of the road.

The Nissan rolled over, Perron said, and ended up killing the pedestrian. Images at the scene show a large power line toppled on a crumpled silver Nissan. Investigators place yellow tags along the road to mark the scene for evidence.

Torres was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for vehicular manslaughter, felony driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and misdemeanor unlicensed driving.

Police shut down East Bayshore Road between Embarcadero Road and Pulgas Avenue during the investigation.
