Pelosi Played Key Role in Weiner Exit

House Democratic leader and San Francisco representative Nancy Pelosi played a key and forceful role in Congressman's Anthony Weiner's decision to step down.

Weiner announced his resignation from Congress midday Thursday amidst an intense sex scandal that started with accidental posting of a twitpic on Twitter. 

He has since admitted that he has sent lots of Twitter messages to women he doesn't know and that some of the photos were sexually graphic.

Pelosi was among the high ranking members of the party who pressured Weiner to resign both privately and publicly.

Early on it was Pelosi who called for a House ethics committee investigation. 

She then ramped it up a notch over the weekend by publicly calling on him to step down. Within hours of that call, Weiner disclosed his plans to enter a treatment center. According to AP, Pelosi's aides made it clear to Weiner that going into treatment would not not negate her demand for a resignation.

Weiner also reportedly had Pelosi at the top of his call list of people to tell that he was going to resign. That phone conversation happeneed Wednesday night ahead of the official resignation.

Following Weiner's announcement Thursday Pelosi issued the following statements. First came a sentence of subtle support, followed by a subtle slam. 

"Today, with the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents and the recognition of his need for help, Congressman Weiner has announced that he will resign from Congress."

"Congressman Weiner exercised poor judgment in his actions and poor judgment in his reaction to the revelations.  Today, he made the right judgment in resigning."

She also said she would pray for his family and she wished him well.
