An investigation into whether the chief of San Mateo County's Probation Department led to that official's retirement on Monday, according to reports.
Stuart J. Forrest, 61, has been the subject of a federal investigation into possible possession of child pornography, according to the San Mateo County Times. He went on administrative leave from the $140,000 a year job on Dec. 21, the newspaper reported.
The probe, begun by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, has been joined by prosecutors from the Justice Department.
No arrests have been made, and there is no details on what evidence -- if any -- there is against Forrest.
One of Forrest's family members filed paperwork with the county's public employee retirement system to make his departure effective immediately, the newspaper reported.
He began with the probation department in 1977 and was promoted to chief in 2009.
