A male driver died Thursday morning in Concord, when his vehicle struck a fence, and went off the road, and rolling down an embankment, police said.

Cpl. Christopher Blakely the crash was reported at 7:57 a.m. on South Larwin near the intersection of Ygnacio Valley and Ayers roads. The car bounced into a couple of trees, then hit a redwood fence, Blakely said, before it ricocheted back across the side street and back up the steep embankment.

Originally, police had information that the car rolled into a house.

“As the Honda went down the embankment, it struck several trees," Blakely said. "From there it came close to striking a house but did not actually strike the house. It ultimately made a U-turn and came to a final point of rest right here on the embankment.”

Sky Burney, a high school junior in the neighborhood, said people tried to comfort the driver after what she described as  "grisly" scene.

“It was really graphic but we tried to keep it really calm for him,” she said.
