A male pit bull named "Blinky" who attacked a 40-year-old woman has been euthanized, according to Contra Costa County Animal Services, and authorities said family members tried to fend off the 9-year-old dog with a baseball bat.
Lt. Joe DeCosta told NBC Bay Area on Monday that a sample of the dog's blood was also sent off to be tested for rabies following Sunday's attack in Pinole. DeCosta did not say who had stabbed and struck the dog, only that it was a family member. He added he did not know what provoked the Sunday attack about 10 a.m. on Silverado Drive.
The woman suffered injuries to her face, arms and legs and was transported to the John Muir Medical Center's trauma center in Walnut Creek, according to fire officials. DeCosta said he believed the woman was still in the hospital on Monday.
