SWAT teams swarmed the Pittsburg home of an elderly woman Wednesday after she reported that her son had locked her inside and beat her with a fire poker.
The still unidentified suspect is a 35-year-old who lived with his mother on the 100 block of North Catamaran Drive and has a slew of previous felony arrests, according to police.
Police Captain Ron Raman said the man allegedly kept his 65-year-old mother confined in the house Tuesday night and repeatedly threatened to burn and kill her. During this time, he also allegedly bludgeoned her repeatedly with a fire poker.
The woman, who police said feared for her life, was able to escape via a rear door when her son wasn't looking. She made it to a neighbor’s house and called police.
At around 9 a.m. Wednesday, SWAT teams initiated negotiations with the suspect and evacuated nearby homes as a precaution, police said.
Despite initially refusing to answer the door or phone, the man surrendered and was taken into custody. Police have charged him with false imprisonment and assault with a deadly weapon.
