Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation in Hayward

A bizarre incident in Hayward Tuesday morning ended with a police shooting with what officers thought was an armed man.

Hayward police said the incident started just before 9 a.m. Tuesday on Mission Boulevard, near Valle Vista. Drivers said they spotted a man on the sidewalk waving a gun in the air.

Officers arrived and moments later shot the man.

A witness who drove by on his way to work told NBC Bay Area he saw an officer with his weapon pointed at the man, who was lying face down with his arms flailing.

Police said the suspect's gun turned out to be a replica firearm. The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. The two officers involved in the shooting are on routine leave while the shooting is investigated.
