Police Fatally Shoot Suspect in Vallejo Taco Bell Drive-Thru

Officers shot and killed a man Saturday night after the suspect reached for a handgun while stopped in a vehicle at a Vallejo fast-food restaurant, police said.

Police were called to the Taco Bell restaurant at 974 Admiral Callaghan Lane around 10:36 p.m. after a restaurant employee reported that a silver Mercedes was parked in the drive-thru lane and that the driver was slumped over in the driver's seat, acting Capt. Joe Iacono said in a news release.

As officers approached the Mercedes, they saw the driver unresponsive in the car with a handgun on his lap. The car was locked and the transmission was in drive, prompting officers to try to prevent any forward movement by the vehicle and call for additional help.

The driver, who was alone, suddenly began to move, according to Iacono. Officers told him to keep his hands visible, but the driver quickly reached for the handgun on his lap.

Fearing for their safety, officers fired at the suspect, Iacono said, and immediately began life-saving efforts and called for medical help. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and a loaded handgun was recovered from the car.

Police have not disclosed the driver's identity because of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has additional information is asked to call Detective Scott Yates at (707) 648-4533 or Detective Craig Long at (707) 648-4514.
