When duty calls, San Francisco police officers answer. Even if that duty is baby-sitting a stranded sea lion pup.
That's exactly what happened to them on Ocean Beach around 1 a.m. Monday.
The Richmond District Blog reports police received a call that the little mammal was in stairwell five, shivering and in distress. Responding officers found the sea lion and then called the Marine Mammal Center.
The facility's rescue van was too far away, so the center asked police to stay and watch the youngster until crews arrived.

The center estimates that the pup was about a year old and very malnourished and dehydrated. The sea lion is now being treated at the Marine Mammal Center.
